Two of our journalists who were under fire in Iraq have returned home safely. 

I wish to commend Renee Horne and her cameraman, Adolf Spannenberg, for courageously staying at their posts during an extremely difficult conflict. 

They remained true to the spirit of independent journalism, in contrast to "embedded" journalism advocated by those who want to stamp their power onto the world today. We can only hope it will be their example that our professionals will emulate. 

I hope the SABC will remain committed to supporting such initiatives that enhance the authenticity of our media and professional standing.
